In the trenches with Swamp Ball

Swamp Ball - eat that g'damn ball, Gators!Confession time: I’m jealous of David and Swamp Ball. Not the kind of jealous where you stalk a girl and then beat up her boyfriend when he’s in the john, necessarily, but still: what a great Florida blog. Tons of readers and support. Great and original news. And totally Gator. He also has the coolest logo ever devised for a UF sports blog: an alligator snapping his jaws in attempt to ensare and, one assumes, gulp down a football or basketball which appears to have been thrown his way. The gator’s backdrop is a murky, dank swamp, something straight out of a horror movie, which looks like it’d be quite threatening to any non-scaly visitors. You look at it and say, “Well, g’damn, wish I’d thought of that idea. An alligator jawin’ a ball, that’s slique.” Then you look at your orange and blue-hued sunglasses and think, “That’s kinda weak by comparo.”

Luckily, David seems to like Orange and Blue Hue and has come up with the great idea that we ought to have a little “roundtable blog” in which we exchange questions and answers to what we each, no doubt, think are cleverly devised and worded questions. O&B Hue enthusiastically agreed. The results - catastrophic, glorious, or both - follow.

O&B Hue: Hello, David. Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. I’ll jump right into it. Tebow vs. Leak. Barring injury to Leak, will Tebow start a game for UF this season?

Leak and TebowSwamp Ball: In time, Tim Tebow will be the man for the Florida Gators. Just like the Six Million Dollar Man, we know that Tebow will be better, stronger, and faster than Chris Leak. At the end of last season, I honestly did not know if Leak would be back for his senior season after the word was Tebow would be signing with Florida. It just seemed that Urban’s bread and butter known as the “Spread Option” was not a fit for a drop back passer in Chris Leak. But, that would not be the case as Leak surprised many by coming back for his senior season.

It appears as if Urban is of the mindset that he’ll modify the offense around Chris Leak’s strengths. Leak will have a chance to finish out his career as the starter while going after the Gators QB record books. Leak had a drop off last year, but seemed to improve as the year finished out. The goal is a SEC crown and anything short of that will be a disappointment. Leak’s other role is to mentor Tebow so that he will be ready physically and mentally to be the Gator starting QB after the season. In what I have heard so far about Tebow, he is physically gifted and has a strong and confident head on his shoulders. I am not sure what Leak will provide Tebow in that regard. However, as they were both highly recruited QBs, there is a similar path there.

Tebow will get some mop-up duty over the course of the season, but he wont be pulled into any pressure-packed games unless something changes significantly. Urban Meyer wants Chris Leak to finish his Senior season in style and every comment he has made so far shows that he fully supports Chris Leak as his QB this season.

O&B Hue: Rivals predictions time. Both UT and UGA are having quarterback ‘issues’ right now, with Ainge reportedly looking terrible in the Vols’ weekly scrimmages, while Mark Richt has to decide whether Joe Tereshinski can ‘walk the dawg’ for Georgia this year. Share your thoughts on these two scenarios.

Erik Ainge takes a sackSwamp Ball: I think choosing the starting QB at Georgia was a difficult one. There are so many guys there in the mix to choose from in Tereshinksi, Cox, and the heralded recruit from last year in Matthew Stafford who by the way was the record breaking QB at the same high school as Chris Leak.

Tereshinski had the experience factor from last year when he was called to duty for the “The Big Cocktail Party” in Jacksonville. Many people believed that Stafford might be able to win the starting job. Although he has lost the battle for now, what has impressed me was his controlled response after learning that he would not be the starter. Nowadays you don’t always see that in college football where we have seen players year in and year out leave the school just because they lose the first round of the battle.

As far as Ainge, the talent level at Tennessee has dropped off a bit over the past few years. That will be clearly evident this year with Vols and a lot of how they do this year depends on the coaching. Back in the mix is Cuttcliffe who is tasked with turning Ainge into a successful SEC QB. Now that’s a big task in itself as the reports early on were that Ainge was not looking all that good in practices. It will be interesting to see if there is any improvement there by Ainge when the Gators visit Vols for Gator’s first big SEC game.

O&B Hue: The Coach Meyer, Coach Adazzio and Coach Hevesy triumvirate. This is the crew we’re looking towards for a strong performance from a young offensive line this season. We’ve had Wilson, Tartt, and Hurt go down with injuries in fall practice, and depth is minimal. The question: are either of these assistant coaches on the hot seat (Hevesy in particular considering he was the only coach on the staff not to receive a raise this year) for the O-line? Remember that Adazzio is now ‘pitching in’ to help with the line in addition to tight ends.

RisslerSwamp Ball: The offensive line has been the area of concern coming into this season. There was a lot of youth here and a rash of injuries to RG starter Wilson, and backup Hurt did not help matters. The projected lineup has caused all kind of shifting to take place with Drew Miller going back inside switching from Right Tackle to Right Guard. It kind of makes sense with Miller going bck to Guard since that is the position he has played mainly in the past.

As far as coaching makeup, I do not see Hevesy getting some help from Addazio on the offensive line so much a reflection on the job that he has done so far. It is more about having Addazio on staff where he has coached the offensive line in the past in places like Notre Dame and others. It’s more about making best use of the team’s resources knowing that this will be an area of concern for this year.

O&B Hue: This is an unfair question because it’s based on a hypothetical. IF… and it’s a big and improbable if, in my opinion… South Carolina beats Florida in the Swamp this year, predict the reaction of Gator Nation, and the consequences to Meyer’s staying power as head ball coach at Florida.

Steve SpurrierSwamp Ball: Well, that is a very hypothetical question because I do not see Gators losing this game at home despite the bad performance last year. Like Steve has said in the past about the Gators: “Georgia’s the enemy. FSU’s the enemy.” It’s intriguing that the Gamecocks have suddenly became another rival due to the Spurrier factor and adding fuel to the fire with Florida’s poor performance against South Carolina in both football and basketball. We can thank Billy Donovan’s Gator Hoops squad for finally getting that monkey off our back.

In the scenario where we possibly would lose at home to South Carolina, that would be a devastating blow. It most likely would kill any chance we would have at an SEC East title. However, I think all the Gator fans out there would say we lost to a truly great coach. The Gator Nation has fully embraced what Urban Meyer is building here, and I don’t see him being a short-term solution. He will be here a long time. He would get past this and as long as he keeps beating Florida State and Georgia and the talent keeps improving, there is no way Gator Nation will turn on Meyer.

O&B Hue: David, thanks for taking the time to answer our questions!

Swamp Ball: Um, yeah, and by the way, I’m not giving you the password to my blog admin, so stop asking.
