New Coaching Hires

Tom O’Brien officially became the new coach of NC State.  He leaves a solid Boston College program for a raise of almost half a million dollars a year.  (Link)

Analysis - A pretty good hire for a program that didn’t want to let its grasp extend beyond its reach as they did searching for a basketball coach.  They learned their lesson.

Randy Shannon accepts the head coaching job at the University of Miami.  Shannon was the defensive coordinator under Larry Coker. (Link)

Analysis - What a joke.  Not that Shannon isn’t a good coordinator but was it really the defense that suffered last year?  A coach like Leach would have guaranteed immediate offensive success while Shannon is probably more of the same.  What happened to the last time UM hired a coordinator instead of an up and coming coach?  His name was Larry Coker, remember him?  One good thing about this hire is they got Shannon on the cheap.  They won’t have to pay as much as they would for a GOOD head coach.  At least UM is consistent about some things - spending (or not spending) money.

Rich Rodriguez accepts Alabama’s offer to coach the Tide.  Rodriguez led the Mountaineers to an 11-1 record this year and turned the school into a perennial top 10 program. (Link)

Analysis - Call it a hunch but I think this was the best decision Alabama could make and will turn out to be a better overall fit for the school than Spurrier or Saban would have been.  I fully expect Alabama to be the best program in the SEC West in the next 3 years.

New Coaching Hires

On the Shannon hiring - the Canes defense was #5 in the nation last year in total defense (at least that’s what I read somewhere)…and I’m pretty sure that was with a flurry of injuries.

Regardless of the quality of the defense, the offense was pretty shoddy and inconsistent. I don’t think the hiring of Shannon has the “wow” factor that a lot of young recruits are looking for…you don’t think Leach will come onto UM’s staff as an offensive coordinator, do you?
Bama + Rodriguez will probably be much more successful.
