Gators Vs. Gamecocks: Gameday Open Thread
![]() Spurrier made his own bed… now he must lie in it. |
Our beloved Gators take on the hated South Carolina Spurriers — er, Gamecocks — today. Kickoff is 7:45PM ET.
We’ve already covered the emotional aspects of this game. Let’s talk some football.
Offense: South Carolina
I give them credit for putting up 36 points against Arkansas on the road last week. That’s enough to win an SEC game and Arkansas’ defense has been pretty good even in their losses — two of the Hogs’ three Ls came at 3 points or less and they held Auburn to a single TD.
So, what to make of South Carolina’s offense? Spurrier’s played musical quarterbacks with his offense all year, which is nothing new for Spurrier. Senior Blake Mitchell has been handed the reins again, which is either good or bad news depending on the kind of play he’ll bring against the Gators. Remembering our last two games against Blake, I expect we’ll see that Shane Matthews look… laser accurate. It doesn’t help that Blake stands to enjoy good protection given Florida’s total lack of a pass rush all year.
Cory Boyd is the kind of running back who can make Florida’s life miserable on defense. He’s a very good power runner, which is precisely what Florida’s defense has such a tough time stopping. South Carolina’s wide receivers have been respectable all year long, with star receiver Kenny McKinley as Mitchell’s favorite target.
If the Carolina offense has a good or even above average night, the only way Florida can win is by outscoring them.
Offense: Florida
Luckily, that is very possible if not probable. South Carolina’s defense is reeling from allowing 650 yards — 541 on the ground — to Arkansas and Darren McFadden a week ago. Sometimes teams have a way of rising up after an embarassing loss, so the fact that this unit comes in with wounded pride is either a good or bad thing depending how one looks at it. Either way, Meyer and Mullen should be able to unleash the full offense on South Carolina and enjoy some positive results.
The one thing which sticks in my craw just a bit is Florida’s lack of a traditional power running back other than Tebow. South Carolina’s run defense was exposed and one would think that Meyer and Mullen would attack that part of the defense first. Is Kestahn Moore out of the doghouse? Do we want him out of the doghouse? I’m afraid he’ll cough the ball up again — something that in this game above all others will be devastating. I think we can count of South Carolina scoring on at least 50% of their possessions. A turnover which goes for a score is a 10 or 14 point swing. MUST… NOT… DROP… BALL.
Tim Tebow has yet to play a “bad” game at Florida. He’s had one or two games where he’s looked more like an average to above average SEC quarterback rather than a superhero, but those performances are by far in the minority. Even in Florida’s crushing loss to Georgia, he played at a Heisman level. So I’m going to count on Tim Tebow playing another strong game for Florida in this crucial game, from which our SEC East hopes dangle by a thread.
Percy Harvin, Brandon James, Louis Murphy, Cornelius Ingram (can we PLEASE get the damn ball to him?) and Bubba Caldwell round out Florida’s playmakers on offense. The Gators have more firepower than the Cocks, but don’t forget, it’s the Visored One on the opposite sideline, which counts for at least one or two touchdowns alone.
Defense: South Carolina
Porous. Unable to stop the run. Better against the pass. (Sound like any defense you know?)
Defense: Florida
Porous. Unable to stop the run. Better, but not great against the pass. Easily fooled on misdirection plays. Not the greatest tacklers in the world.
Let’s face it. Both defenses suck out loud. Not too much analysis is needed here. This should be a high-scoring affair.
South Carolina Special Teams
Ryan Succop’s big leg has been a weapon for them, but it was odd he shanked that 40-yarded against Tennessee — in OT, no less — wide (WIDE) right. Their kickoff and punt return coverage has been average as has their return unit.
Florida Special Teams
It’s so nice to see this become such a big strength for the Gators. In my admittedly biased opinion, Brandon James is the most talented kickoff and punt return man in the country. My expectations have risen so high that I nearly expect to see him bring the ball out to the 40-yard line on kickoff — anything less, and I’m disappointed. On almost every return, it looks like he has a chance to break for the endzone.
Kicker Joey Ijjas has had a solid year, his low kick blocked by Auburn in that game notwithstanding.
We’re supposed to win this game
The analysis of both teams clearly favors the Gators. Vegas likes Florida by a TD. We have better players, more depth, more talent. We have Tim Freakin’ Tebow and Percy G-D Harvin, for crying out loud. Unfortunately this will be a grudge match… a difficult game to win with Darth Visor on the opposing sideline. Godspeed, Gators. The good guys have gotta win today.

A fumble on the opening snap and a blocked punt on their second possession. Florida’s looking really, really, really good.

Oh yeah, I forgot we had to play defense. Well…nevermind.

Great start but South Carolina will be able to score on our defense all night. Tebow and co. have to score every possession.

Wondy is horrible.
Tony is worse.
Kyle is the worst.
I’m beginning to hate Reggie, Alex, Earl and the rest of the the juniors who bailed on us. Our defense sucks.

Mitchell can’t keep throwing those perfect timed fades and those receivers evidently can’t keep catching them….I think Florida will be okay, especially since USC’s corners can’t keep up with Florida’s receivers (if they start catching the ball)
Oh yeah, and Tim Tebow has re-started his trucking business (3 rushing TD’s in the first 20 minutes)

We can’t hold onto the goddamn football this year! Damn it!
By GatorPilot on 11.10.07 9:11 pm
if they score after Brandon’s fumble it will be a 14 point swing, and I don’t think that will bode well for the second half…

RJSPlow: we held them… CI just made a bobbled catch… he’s good. We can end this half with a 3-poss. lead…

Illegal shift… aarrgh.
By GatorPilot on 11.10.07 9:24 pm
We could have put this game away twice in the first half. Both times we ended up with turnovers instead of points.
By GatorPilot on 11.10.07 9:27 pm
i don’t care that we have a two possession lead going into the break, the secon half is going to be wide freakin’ open and i see SC coming out with guns ‘a blazing, so i hope Florida can hold on…
By rjsplow on 11.10.07 9:27 pm
Probably shouldn’t complain about a 13 point lead at the half, I guess.
By GatorPilot on 11.10.07 9:40 pm
no, i’m not complaining i’m just sharing my anxiety about the second half… there were so many mistakes this semester that its been really hard to tell who is actually playing better. i would put a small advantage to Florida, but the second half comes completely down to the side that first ceases the turnovers, whoever settles it down first will take control in the third.

Aaron Hernahdez looks like Tebow when he runs with the ball… I’m not upset about Florida having him for the next 2-3 years…

Huge 4th down conv. for the Cocks.
By GatorPilot on 11.10.07 10:05 pm
huge sack by dunlap for the Gators.
By rjsplow on 11.10.07 10:06 pm
SACK!!!! YES!!!!
By GatorPilot on 11.10.07 10:06 pm
NICE JOB defense!
By GatorPilot on 11.10.07 10:08 pm
Is anyone else as concerned as I am about the number of drops by Florida players on both sides of the ball?
By Chris on 11.10.07 10:26 pm
Yes…
By GatorPilot on 11.10.07 10:27 pm
Wow, we’re in a position here with :15 to go to put this game away! I love it!
By GatorPilot on 11.10.07 10:36 pm
not so much about the defense, Major would have caught it but he has the cast on his hand. I am VERY upset about the receivers not catching about 3-4 touchdown passes tonight. Luckily for the Gators, USC is also having a problem catching the ball~
By rjsplow on 11.10.07 10:37 pm
I’m starting to get that WINNING feeling.
By GatorPilot on 11.10.07 10:45 pm
The crowd is leaving with 12:49 to go… this is a fanbase that’s used to losing.
By GatorPilot on 11.10.07 10:46 pm
Major Wright puts on the MAJOR hits
By rjsplow on 11.10.07 10:52 pm
That’s is… I want to punch Louis Murphy in the face for the three touchdowns he’s dropped….
By rjsplow on 11.10.07 11:02 pm
Why in God’s name is Tebow still in the game with less than four minutes to go? Does Urban not remember the 2005 Florida-Alabama game when David Shula, wanting to embarass Florida, left Tyrone Prothoro in the game and he got his leg mangled six ways to Sunday? This may be the dumbest call I’ve seen Urban make in almost three years at UF.
By Chris on 11.10.07 11:19 pm
If Tebow does not take the lead in the Heisman race after today, I’m going on strike.
By GatorPilot on 11.10.07 11:24 pm
he will, especially with Dixon on a bye week…
and yeah, i was a little surprised that TT was in the game for so long, but Cam is hurt, and I think he’s either hurt more than they’ve let on, or there is something else going on…
By rjsplow on 11.10.07 11:49 pm
I hope you’re right. He deserves to win it.
By GatorPilot on 11.11.07 12:04 am
this may be a topic for a huge response and perhaps you could have Keltic jam on the issue for a little bit, but do you think its a good thing for him to win it this year, or will it make next year’s expectations completely and utterly insane? everyone in Gator Nation already sees him as the “chosen one” but the man is not even 20 years old…. how much more unfair would our fan’s expectations get if he did? would it be better for him to get consideration but not win it, and come into next year riding a huge wave of publicity and expectation?
