Gators Chomp ‘Cats Again

7 in a row over Kentucky

Well, well, well, Kentucky.

You couldn’t beat us with Tubby, so you ran him out of town.

You couldn’t beat our players, so we sent five of them to the NBA and started over from scratch with freshmen and a couple of sophomores who played bit roles on our championship teams.

You couldn’t get Billy Donovan to leave Florida for Kentucky, so you picked up a tough new coach who was sure to be the new sheriff in the SEC.

You couldn’t get Randolph Morris to stick around, so you recruited an All-American center who was a lock to beat our sophomore big man in the paint.

You did everything… tried everything.

And look what it got you.

Kentucky fans, before you even start:

1) The refs weren’t out to screw you.
2) Meeks played big minutes and Jasper contributed at key moments, so don’t even try to play the injury card.
3) Patrick Patterson famously said “In the end, Kentucky will win” when he chose the bluegrass over the Swamp. Turns out he could learn a few things from a guy named Mo Speights.
4) Florida played one of its worst games of the year… and still won.

How’s it feel, Cat fans, to get schooled by a team that was in high school the last time you lost to the Gators?

Here’s a suggestion: that sting you’re feeling right now? Get used to it. These Gators may not be an elite team yet, but they’ve got plenty of bite. And, oh yeah: they’re all freshmen and sophomores. This crew picked up right where their championship predecessors left off.

And they’re just getting started.

Congratulations, guys. Great game, well done.

Tru, as promised, a more reasonable ‘analysis’ is coming today… the above is for certain other people… NOT you, my friend!

I’m going to take a wild, wild shot in the dark here, and guess that those “other people” of whom you speak advertise their allegiance to a certain school by advocating the defeat of a certain other school in their screen name.

Heh. Well, not that person specifically. We get a fair number of ‘Cat fans here at O&B Hue periodically (admittedy, that’s usually when either myself or KG rile ‘em up) who like to drop lots of four letter bombs and proclaim how our end here at our little football school is near. This post is for those people. Not the many friends I’ve made who are Kentucky fans. Check my next post for a more balanced opinion.

It’s great to see that UK can still get under the Gators skin and provoke smack talk…All that means is that you still don’t believe that winning and being a champion is a birthright. I love the rivalry UK/UF have established, the more heated it gets, the better it will be in the future. Good game last night Gators, but we all know that all success is fleeting.

No doubt you can, Rich. Beating Kentucky is still a big deal and aways will be. Take it as a compliment… we absolutely love beating your team and we hope to keep doing it long into the future.

If we all did in fact know that ‘all success is fleeting’, then programs would never succumb to the temptation of believing that championships are a ‘birthright’ - that rather implies a permanent state of success, not so?

But in fact success is not necessarily fleeting; the elite teams are defined by their lengthy stays near the top. And because success feeds success - in recruiting, in revenue, in self-confidence, in intimidation - it is difficult to dislodge a program once it reaches the heights… so long as it never forgets that victories and titles have to be earned. There is no such thing as a birthright in sports. You don’t deserve to win because you’re in the elite; you’re in the elite because you win.

F*ck off

(Another classy, well-spoken UK fan)

You beat the cats at your home this time and have beaten us 7 times. The reason that has happened so many times in a row is that our previous coach could not recruit nor coach the big time recruits and we have to live with that for a while longer.
However, we will get the elite players again, matter of time till that happens. When it does, with our coach, the win-lost in this series will go the other way.
I am one UK fan that did not want BD nor have I ever wanted him. I want UK to get away from the Rick Pitino and all his hangerons era and start one that will sustain winning over the next several decades.

I believe the life long record now stands at 84-31 (favoring UK). Look at that record and realize your team has won the last 7 games to get to that point. I would relish what you have going right now because as Al McGuire said, “we had it before you, we have it during you and we’ll have it when you’re gone.” (referring of course to tradition)

Every time I think the blog authors of this site can’t get any dumber, hold the presses, you say something else, completely stupid. Yes, you got all the calls…ALL of them. Patterson has played Florida once now, and you consider that an indication of who will win in the end? New money is the best way to refer to the Gators, not used to winning, won’t have much of a tradition.

Daniel:

Wishful thinking.

Fans like all of us…they are who they are even if they have a reputation of talking out of both sides of their proveribal mouths. As with our children fans and bloggers should remember words do not go away so we should be sure of what we say and why we say those things we do. Freud was right. What one says gives much more insight into the speaker or writer than that person knows. A lack of class can not be overcome or denied even with a win.

Come on guys, let’s not dwell too long on this. Kentucky is obviously in a little down period and they will get better. There is no need to rub it it, as UK came to our house and played admirably and fought hard - making their free throws and coming up with a great shot to force overtime.

As for bad-mouthing Tubby Smith - you know nothing about basketball if you question either Tubby’s xs and os coaching ability or recruiting ability. Tubby has been a winner everywhere he’s been and will win at Minnesota too. You should be so lucky to always have a coach with that type of integrity and work ethic who gets as much out of his players. Just because you won a ton of championships in the 40s dosn’t make it your right to be a championship contender every year. Just ask Notre Dame.

Kentucky will rebuild and will be back sooner rather than later, but UF isn’t going anywhere either. Billy D has turned our football school into a basketball powerhouse. True, we do not have dozens of banner hanging from the rafters. But we do have a solid tradition in the making. Al Horford drove down to G’ville for this game. The football team was there showing their support. Instead of taking an attitude like Kentucky - we at UF, including the football team - embrace the other sports. Spurrier planted the seeds for this tradition, and Urban continues to embrace it. UF is one of the best athletic programs in the country. We do not play any sport we cannot compete in.

We are proud of this basketball team. UF beat Kentucky for the 7th straight time. The officiating, while not great, was fair. UF simply outplayed UK on that particular night. There is nothing to be ashamed of.

Meeks and Jasper would have played more if they hadn’t been injured. Patterson has been playing through pain for several games now. UK has every right to play the injury card.
It was such a hard-fought game that I don’t think Florida outplayed UK, they just outlasted UK. However, for such a young team, they play well together. I don’t think they belong in the tourney this year, but next year they could win the SEC.

Classy. About what I’d expect out of a Gator fan.

Kentucky has joined the ranks of Notre Dame and Michigan in rising to the forefront of fans who use the “tradition” card as a staple of their argument. Look at the other people who share that approach to see how pathetic it really is.

Alabama and Kentucky, playing the “tradition” card in the SEC football and basketball since the late-90s.

Wow UK fans, you have to be kidding me. You guys talk more trash than anybody. You’re the most biased fans I’ve ever seen. You shrug off everything UF does like it doesn’t count and preach that UK will be back “where it belongs” in no time. UF is better than UK now and nothing guarantees that UK will ever be better again. Deal with it

Guys, lets be honest, KY has no depth and ran out of gas. Its worth noting Jasper and Meeks have played very little with the team and that showed as well, chemistry wise. Further, Florida got a ton of calls (look at the free throw discrepancy) and Calathes should have gotten T’d up for running over Bradley on the dead ball.

Florida is good, but not that good. Even in our worst year in decades, I still dont think Florida is good enough to beat KY at Rupp.

And lastly, Gators, you guys are going to absolutely hate Gillespie over the next few years. :)

I’ve been reading through the comments from UK fans, and with the exception of a few in the front of the comment thread, all I’m reading are excuses! Gator fans- we need to look at UK fans and their laughable arrogance and promise one another to never, ever get this insufferably pathetic!!

And in regards to all of the whiny complaining up above, I’ve only got one thing to say: scoreboard, birches.

that was, of course, supposed to say “bitches.” Apologies, kittens.

I’m a smart UF fan, you’re a bunch of birches…lol

I love hearing about the tradition of UK basketball. 2 champs in the forties, 2 in the fifties. Gets tiring a bit like Notre Dame and all their tradition. No one really cares, outside of the bluegrass state, what the hell happened before segregation. Now i’ll give credit where credit is due, 3 titles in 39 years is wonderful, but it does not quite make a dynasty.

It’s a little bit better than two titles in 100 chaching…by the way, don’t forget about three straight championship appearances from 96-98 and our total domination of the sec and the tourney, records Florida will never match. I just can’t wait till little boy Caruthers comes to Rupp, I’m sure the fan base will have a Walsh-like cheer ready for him after that cheap shot he pulled on Bradley.

Caruthers… good one. I laughed. :)

Yeah I laughed to when our Ad had to write Florida an apology for the Walsh is a fag cheer, I think he almost cried…priceless.

Yeah Big Danielle, you guys are great cheerleaders. Your cheerleading squad is one of the tops in the nation. Unfortunately, your cheerleaders athletic ability far exceeds your basketball team. “Walsh is a fag?” Wow -that is so clever.

As for not winning in Rupp….from my records, 7 in a row means we might recently have beaten you there.

Let’s move on - the Kentucky game is history. In my mind you are lumped in with Providence and High Point as just another weak team that the Gators beat this season with a squad full of freshman and sophomores. Only, Providence and High Point didn’t bitch about it nearly as much.

I hope Kentucky DOES get better. They’ll have to just to keep pace with the Gators, who have zero seniors.

I just wonder where all you fair weather fans were two decades ago? By the way, apparently gator fever isn’t even spreading too much in Florida, being that you rarely sell out any games and while we may suck this year, we’re still on national tv every game. Defending champs can’t even get on every other game…hmmm

“3 titles in 39 years is wonderful, but it does not quite make a dynasty.”

I think only about 3 or 4 teams have won 3 titles in the past 39 years. Only UCLA and Kentucky have won 4 titles in the past 40 years. That makes a dynasty.

I wish UK fans would stop bringing up the dynasty thing. It’s just as irrelevant to this year’s games as Florida’s 2 national titles. Of course, I’m not seeing any class from the Gator fans, either.

If only there were more insightful UF fans like skigator and less of the immature rjsplow-type commenters.

“The timing probably favors Florida; as of Thursday, Jodie Meeks and and Derrick Jasper, two of Kentucky’s better players, haven’t been practicing due to hip and knee issues (respectively), so the ‘Cats are unlikely to be at full strength”

From one of the blogs’ earlier articles. Seems like the authors of this blog basically gave UK fans the excuses Gator fans are now chastising Wildcat fans for using.
