Doesn’t This Say It All?
Here’s Billy Donovan after Florida’s 1st-round loss in the SEC Tournament.
“That was the one thing that was so special about the last two years. All the dirty work, the little things … all that went into winning they embraced. They loved doing that stuff. This team has not come to love those things. They have come to a lot of times to avoid those things. They don’t want those things.”
Credit goes to Donovan for so eloquently expressing this… and also for sending a much-needed message to his young squad.

Harsh, but fair…

What a classless bastard. HE recruited these guys and now he throws them under the bus when things are going bad. I’ve never seen a coach belittle his players like this. No wonder their aren’t motivated. Perhaps your gator colored glasses have some smudges on them. Though this is what the rest of us expect from Florida. Too bad for those kids.
By JL on 03.14.08 8:15 am
I was watching the game with 4 former D-1 players, one from Duke, and we all said the same thing….that team had given up. These guys better go to OZ over the summer and find some heart.
By urbanisagod on 03.14.08 9:25 am
What that comment tells me is I expect my players to motivate themselves…good luck in the Not In Tournament
By Daniel on 03.14.08 9:26 am
Maybe these guys should find a team with less selfish coach who helps them instead of blaming them. Billy D knew exactly who these kids were when he smiled at their parents and promised them everything. He should have said that everything will be great as long as you win, but don’t expect me to stand behind you if you don’t. If they aren’t motivated, this is his fault. And is this really how he expects to build the team back up in the next few years? What an idiot. You would never hear Coach K or Roy W say something like this– and they have had some down years too.
By JL on 03.14.08 9:38 am
I do question the comments about not wanting to see them as sophomores, etc.
It really sounded like he threw them under the bus. Players play the game but the coach is responsible for getting them ready.
By Cat Fan on 03.14.08 11:06 am
Cat–it’s called “motivating.”
Billy is a master. Don’t worry about us. He’ll have them ready next year.
By AceG8tr on 03.14.08 12:27 pm
Daniel…
What would Donovan’s comment have to do with player your coaching in the Y league?
And why would BD expect your players to motivate themselves?
By gatorhippy on 03.14.08 6:20 pm
Ace - not sure I would have said it to the national media. BD handled this poorly.
By Cat Fan on 03.15.08 12:54 pm
How ’bout them ‘Cats?? They sure did well against UGA!
By Vince Gagliano on 03.15.08 2:19 pm
Well, I must say…
There’s nothing like a little Cat & Vol fail to make a gloomy Gator great….
By gatorhippy on 03.15.08 7:58 pm
UF and UK in the NIT?
This I gotta see!
And JB said UK was going to win the SEC tournament.
By Vince Gagliano on 03.15.08 8:07 pm
I have to admit it, seeing the Cats lose to Georgia — who was playing their second game in as many days on top of everything else — warmed my heart a little. Guess that’s what a crappy season does to you…
By GatorPilot on 03.15.08 8:45 pm
I am glad I cheered ‘Bama on Thursday. It was interesting watch UF fans in person. Almost as entertaining as watching UT fans.
By Cat Fan on 03.15.08 11:43 pm
Trust me, we’re nowhere near as entertaining as ‘Cat fans.
It’s amazing, really. The refs have cost the ‘Cats every close game they’ve ever lost. :)
By GatorPilot on 03.16.08 12:16 am
Yeah, the call at the end of the game was horrible but we just didn’t play well, no excuses. Gatorhippy, what are you talking about? First of all, learn how to type complete sentences. Here’s an example: Nick Calathes is a punk who gets intimidated by physical play. Notice the subject and verb. I don’t coach a y league, or any leagues for that matter. Lay off the crack man.
By Daniel on 03.16.08 11:14 am
Gatorpilot-what’s amazing is a team full of McDonald’s All-Americans not making the tourney and their fans always using the excuse they’re not experienced enough or they’re not skilled enough. when you play a cupcake schedule like Florida did, not making the tourney has nothing to do with experience and everything to do with coaching. How much experience did LSU have when they beat you at home? What, one senior? What about the walking wounded in Kentucky and Alabama? After you’ve played 30 plus games of college basketball, experience is not a question, but heart, talent and coaching is.
By Daniel on 03.16.08 11:30 am
Daniel,
FYI, I don’t think 2 McDonald’s All-Americans makes a team “full” of McDonald’s All-Americans. Both of those All-Americans are both freshman, when the group that one back to back National Championships were freshman that team didn’t go anywhere either.
By Mike on 03.16.08 12:37 pm
I’ll take “heart” and “intensity” for $1000, Daniel…
Talent and coaching aren’t in question. But our team has problems right now. No two ways about it.
By Gatorpilot on 03.16.08 3:10 pm
We are in and you guys are out. Enough said. Once again, good luck in the NIT.
By John_Boatright on 03.16.08 5:37 pm
I’ll take an 11-Seed. GO CATS!!!!!
By Cat Fan on 03.16.08 5:51 pm
All that matters is that you lost to the crappy 4-12 dogs and we didn’t. So much for your next SEC Tournament Championship…..you won as many games in the tourney as we did. Zero. Despite being led by your 2 seniors and their 50% of your offense. I can’t wait to start another streak against the Cats next season.
What a fraud. Also, karma is your 20,000 trash talking - living in the past- fans who came to Atlanta and didn’t get to see their team crap the bed against the Dawgs.
I read in the paper this morning that one Cat fans claims he will be filing suit against the Georgia Dome in the US District Court in nowhere county, KY. Only a braniac from Lexington would threaten to sue a building.
Sorry for the outburst - but Daniel and John deserve nothing less. Hope your boys enjoy their brief trip to Cali. 4 more days ’til your season ends and you clowns can crawl back into your hole to compile more facts about how great UK was in the 40s.
By skigator93 on 03.16.08 6:28 pm
I dunno, Daniel…
You made the statement…
“What that comment tells me is I expect my players to motivate themselves”…
Why don’t you explain it to us then…
By gatorhippy on 03.17.08 6:26 am
How’s this for a complete sentence, Danny?
I think it’s safe to say at this point that with this year’s tourney bid UK has officially become the Notre Dame of College basketball…
By gatorhippy on 03.17.08 6:28 am
Have fun in the NIT. Go Cats!!!
By travyork on 03.17.08 7:46 am
“Bringing the pain to Lexington”? I didn’t know Rupp was hosting the NIT.
By travyork on 03.17.08 7:49 am
All I can say is… go Dawgs… :)
By GatorPilot on 03.17.08 8:46 am
To quote Pilot,
“Unacceptable to lose to the Dawgs. Unaccetpable! (sic)”
By Vince Gagliano on 03.17.08 9:04 am
You guys lost to LSU, at home…and you’re playing in the NIT…nuff said. Georgia, if I remember correctly, beat Ole Miss, UK, Miss. St and Arkansas…all teams you guys lost to…ouch…have fun with San Diego St….once again Florida embarrasses the SEC…just like against MIchigan in football…ouch
By Daniel on 03.17.08 9:12 am
Yeah, Georgia beat Ole Miss, UK, Miss. St, Arkansas…but nobody else.
Michigan in Big Ten Football? Have you guys seen YOURSELVES in SEC basketball??
By Vince Gagliano on 03.17.08 9:14 am
I think that Hooter’s has the best chicken wings! I usually get them 3 mile island and all drummies with blue cheese dressing. So good! The best Hooter’s, I believe, is in Atlanta, the one close to the Georgia Dome. Unbelievable! I have been to the original one in Clearwater, but to be honest, I was a little disappointed.
By John_Boatright on 03.17.08 10:36 am
I’m so sorry we embarassed you by losing a bowl game Daniel.
Yet again, Daniel must revert to bagging on a team full of underclassmen in a rebuilding year following a National Championship.
You struggle enough with your knowledge of basketball, let’s not try to cross over into the land of the complete unknown (winning in football). Just leave that to the big boys.
By the way, you did do us proud by edging out FSU in the Music City Bowl. I know FSU only brought 7 players and a water boy to the game, but it is still FSU and we always like to watch them lose.
By skigator93 on 03.17.08 10:38 am
Yeah I’ve seen ourselves. 12-4 in the conference this year…not too shabby
By Daniel on 03.17.08 10:39 am
Hooters is nasty.
If you’re looking for wings in the ATL, stop by Taco Mac or Three Dollar Cafe. Taco Mac has multiple locations and they are opening one up in CNN Center. Three Dollar has a couple locations left - newest one on Roswell Road near Chastain Park in Buckhead.
By skigator93 on 03.17.08 10:42 am
Yeah, but the conference was so bad this year (us included) that UGA won the tourney.
By skigator93 on 03.17.08 10:44 am
There is another wing place in Florida that is like a Hooters but he girls wear black outfits. What is that place called and is it any good?
By John_Boatright on 03.17.08 11:09 am
Winghouse and yes…
However, it’s owned and operated by former FL Gator OL Crawford Ker…
So you probably don’t want to patronize that establishment, John…
He actually withstood a lawsuit by Hooter’s claiming he stole their idea…
The court ruled nobody could have a sole claim to chicks in skimpy clothes serving bar food…
By gatorhippy on 03.17.08 11:28 am
Oh yeah…
It’s called Ker’s Winghouse…

The dude is from Louisville. What do you expect?
By John_Boatright on 03.17.08 12:05 pm
A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members.
In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Now, as we know, excessive intake of alcohol kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine.
By John_Boatright on 03.17.08 12:17 pm
The problem is that there are also fewer brain cells to work with. Ones that regulate vital functions, coherent thinking, etc. are destroyed.
It’s like pick-a-coach-Billy cutting almost all of his bench players so that only his starters and a select few reserves are left. Sure, the average talent of the team increases, but this hurts the team. Who steps in if there are too many injuries? Who does the squad have to scrimmage against? What is one of the cut players might have markedly improved in the offseason?
Also, drinking affects rational thinking. Thus, more efficiency in the brain is counteracted by “idiotic” decisions.
Lose-lose
By Vincent Gagliano on 03.17.08 2:06 pm
By the way, Rajon Rondo also came from Louisville.
What WERE you expecting?
By Vincent Gagliano on 03.17.08 2:11 pm
Tubby kept Rajon Rondo from living up to his potential at UK.
By John_Boatright on 03.18.08 9:15 am
But what about Derek Anderson?
By Vince Gagliano on 03.18.08 10:03 am
Derek Anderson was a great player.
By John_Boatright on 03.18.08 10:22 am
But he’s from Louisville!
By Vince Gagliano on 03.18.08 10:43 am
Actually, he is from Mason County. He was born and raised there. Hey, do you all still have terrorists training down there in Florida? Thanks for 9/11 guys!
By John_Boatright on 03.18.08 1:33 pm
That’s pretty hilarious John. Are you going to tell us some cool cancer jokes next?
Jackass.
By skigator93 on 03.18.08 1:50 pm
Skiboat69,
You did not answer the question. Hope you guys are being vigilant! Also, please don’t call me names. It is not nice. Also, also, lung cancer is the number one killer of all cancers. So if you smoke please stop! Also, also, also, many people believe that breast cancer is the form of cancer that kills woman but it is not. Once again it is lung cancer. So woman need to be more concerned about there lungs instead of there breast.
By John_Boatright on 03.18.08 3:12 pm
Two cancer patients walk into a bar…
By John_Boatright on 03.18.08 3:15 pm
…and they both look at John in pity and say “man, it must suck to be you.”
By skigator93 on 03.18.08 9:51 pm
Now that was very funny!!
By John_Boatright on 03.19.08 9:17 am
A Florida fan, a Kentucky fan, and a UCLA fan walk into a bar. The trio discusses the NBA playoffs when the UCLA fans says
“I’m picking the Lakers to win the NBA championship. They’re in the same city as the Bruins, and they have so many titles. What’s not to love?”
The Kentucky fan shakes his head and says,
“No way, the Celtics will win the title! They have such a long history and tradition of winning. Besides, Rajon Rondo is the point guard over there.”
The Gator fan shakes his head and says,
“I like the San Antonio Spurs.”
