NIT-picking: From A to Z(tecs)

It’s official, ladies and gentlegators. Florida isn’t going to get a shot at three straight titles and is heading for NIT-land. First on the plate is a San Diego team (Not the Rockets or Clippers of old, remember, but San Diego State)

But look on the bright side, folks. The Aztecs are an accomplished sports school, with a distinguished list of stars including Marshall Faulk, pictured here, and Tony Gwynn Sr. Unfortunately, that’s about it.

Hey, at least we get them in the O-Dome! Oh wait, I forgot that Florida hasn’t even done well at home as of late. But the Gators have planted their own seeds, and now they must reap what they sow.

Don’t count out SDSU’s coach, Steve Fisher. In a past coaching life, he led Michigan to the 1989 national championship over Dean Smith and the North Carolina Tar Heels. A few years later, he would lead a recruiting class headlined by future NBA stars Chris Webber, Juwan Howard, and Jalen Rose to back-to-back national championship games. In a conference where the marquee programs were Purdue and Indiana, this was a notable achievement.

I get the feeling that this is going to be one of those games where the Gators win purely on talent, plain and simple. I can just see Coach Donovan in the press conference deriding his team for a lack of effort right now. There won’t be lots to learn for UF here.

However, don’t discount the silver lining here. The young Gators have a golden opportunity to win some games and play in New York City’s grandest stage, Madison Square Garden. Meanwhile, Kentucky could easily find itself posterized by a bunch of Dwayne Wade/Packers fans in the first round and taking pride only in their continued NCAA tourament streak.

Very important coincidence here: The Gators opened their 2006 season with a win at, of all places, MSG. There, they toppled the hometown Syracuse Orange and proceeded to etch their name in the history books.

Could this team go far in the bracket and have some of the Garden’s magic rub off on them? Only time will tell.

Why the mention of Kentucky in the above?

Another noteworthy factoid about SDSU: When I was attending UF, there was a monthly rag (in the free newsboxes on campus next to the Alligator) named “U Magazine” that specialized in printing pictures of hot coeds.

They listed the schools with the hottest male and female students and SDSU was “far and away” #1 on the female side.

I know this doesn’t have much to do with the result of the basketball game, but our knowledge of the school is pretty limited! Perhaps we can be relieved that the game is at home and our players won’t have to worry about being distracted by the Aztec student section…..it’s something.

BTW, hats off to the Dawgs. I can’t believe what they just pulled off. They are about as shallow as can be when it comes to players.

UK fans, let me give you some “Cat”nip for a change. I’ve ragged on you endlessly so I owe you one:

Here we a case of severly wishful thinking by a Florida fan. What we’ve said here doesn’t hold a candle to this laugher. Read it and comment away on the corresponding site.

Everyone already knows that Tebow would lead the nation in points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocked shots.

Vince is just a hater because that hot blond in his MMC2100 class keeps writing “I love Timmy T” on her notebook.

“Everyone already knows that Tebow would lead the nation in points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocked shots”…

And then everyone outside Gator Nation would bitch about him being a “product of the system” and say his stats are “padded”…

I don’t even take MMC2100, Ski.

Besides, how could you possibly “spy” on any of my classes up there in Atlanta, home of Dwight Howard, Javaris Crittenton, and sports teams with bird nicknames.

Hopefully they have “fixed” that class. When I was in school the “C” was highly emphasized in MMC.

We’re not all for the birds up here - we have the Braves still….not to mention the Georgia Force Arena ball team and whatever they called the new WNBA team - that is sure to be a ticket selling smash!

Don’t forget, the Braves moved from Milwaukee. (But the Hawks did move from St. Louis)

It’s just coincidence that a lot of teams up there share the same kind of theme.

I might go into political science as a second major, not journalism.
