Harvey to Jags, Bub Caldwell to Bengals

chadjohnson[1].jpg

In one of the most surprising and controversial moves of the NFL draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars traded most of their picks to the Ravens to grab Gator defensive end Derrick Harvey 8th overall. The move was surprising, not only because Harvey was projected to Carolina at 13th, but also because Jacksonville staked a heavy portion of their future on the star prospect.

Actually, the Jaguars’ choice wasn’t that unusual for upper management. Their big brass has a distinct taste for players from a school just 70 miles away (Bobby McCray, Fred Taylor, Jeremy Mincey, Reggie Nelson, Mike Peterson etc.) Urban Meyer is good friends with head coach Jack Del Rio. Harvey will reunite with Reggie Nelson, himself the Jags first-round choice last year.

However, to use a slightly misguided analogy, the move is as risky as Shaq to Phoenix or Kidd to Dallas. Harvey will face a lot of pressure to produce right away; Quentin Groves can only do so much for his part. However, after a playoff loss to the Patriots, management has confidence. I hope.

As for Bubba Caldwell, who already graduated anyway, I’m scared out of my wits. It’s not the fact that he decided to leave for the NFL, was picked lower in the draft than brother Reche (2nd round to San Diego), or the issues that pessimistic scouts will always find.

What worries me is the fact that he’s heading to the turmoiled team that is the Cincinnatti Bengals. He has the physical tools to be a #2 receiver in the NFL, but will likely be the third-string guy at best, what with the two eager (Oregon State) Beavers in Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmansadeh. Cincy’s soap opera has been well-documented by ESPN, and I hope Dre will come out of it just fine.

If anything, an excellent performance at practice could give Johnson the rationale he needs for his desire to be traded. Gulp.

Here’s hoping you’ll be all right, guys. No pressure. No pressure at all.

I liked what Chris Carter said…will Caldwell be able to break the long line of Florida wide receiver flooks in the NFL.
But the funny thing is, how did Woodson fall to the 6th round? I know he didn’t do so hot after we beat LSU, but come on, the guy has a perfect NFL body and a rocket for an arm. Some people will live to regret that decision…if I let’m.

The 14 on the Wonderlik (?) after that fine Kentucky education might have had something to do with it.

Plus, he needs to refine his mechanics a bit.

Now, he gets to join Jared Lorenzen on the list of UK QBs who are Manning’s hapless victims.

Your sentence structure smells of Florida scholastics…

I don’t think it’s as much his mechanics as his pocket awareness. His inability to throw away the ball against Georgia and UT cost us two victories.

The first sentence doesn’t even make sense. How can the location of a school affect the way I write anyway?

As for the second, I have trouble coming to grips with the realistic notion of UK football having a 10-win season. Truth is, there are so many more factors that come into play than the quarterback. Just like it does for basketball.

And to think you had Bear Freakin’ Bryant on your coaching staff once. Too bad the Godfather Cat won so much it drove him away and cost you a legitimate shot at becoming the two-sport school Florida is now.

He he. “Dicky” Lyons. How on earth?

And Joker Phillips, huh?

Last but not least, let’s not forget the NFL bust that was Tim Couch.

Easy on the roid rage Vincy, I was talking about Urban.
We could have easily won ten games last year but we don’t care, it’s a basketball state. A bunch of guys grabbing each other’s junk and lying on top of one another doesn’t get us going like it does down in Florida. You know, football is a spin-off of wrestling which was started as a way for the greeks and romans to have a little “special” time with their male companions, if you get my drift.
Florida NFL BUST LIST
Danny Wurfel
Shane Andrews
Rex Grossman(should keep from talking ever again about an NFL bust. At least Couch didn’t cost his team the superbowl by himself)
Every Florida receiver in the past decade
I could go on but I don’t have time to list basically every football player that has come out of Florida recently.

Kentucky busts
Tim Couch

Hmmm. Who is tipping the scales now? Truth is if it wasn’t for Steve Spurier and a disputed gift to play against OSU in the championship game, Florida would have nothing. You owe it all to Steve, who actually left your school eventually for the Cocks…funny how it all comes full circle.

Daniel… seriously. We gotta do this every thread?

This is getting tedious for all involved.

Besides, the quality of Florida football players who HAVE made it in the NFL (Emmit Smith, Jack Youngblood, Javon Kearse, Lito Sheppherd, etc. etc.) far outdoes the UK successes.

Couch got caught with roids. Lorenzen can’t seriously compete with Eli Manning (Eli, people! The runt of Archie’s litter.) Woodson will face even more trouble now that he’s a Super Bowl champion. Marlon McCree hasn’t been invited to a Pro Bowl, unlike Fred Taylor.

I could do this ALL DAY!! Stick to hoops, dude. If you want halfway decent football with your basketball, try North Carolina.

Once again, Daniel, showing everyone here your ignorance, huh?

Luckily the Hippy stopped by for a visit and is able to educate you…

American football is derived from rugby which was derived from a contest played in medieval times when men from entire villages would compete against each other to move a “ball” to a “goal” often located miles away from where the competition started…

Ancient Greek wrestling has zero to do with it…

And seriously, Dan…

The fact that the only bust UK has is in Couch is due to the fact that UK rarely produces ANY talent wanted by the NFL…

Kentucky will be all right under Rich Brooks, which is basically saying that Brooks has done amazing things there. Doing “all right” at Kentucky takes Herculean effort.

Kentucky might win 10 games someday but all the planets will have to align and it’ll never happen in consecutive years.

Basketball will always be good but there are lots of good basketball teams. The best has come and gone for Kentucky athletics.

You’re right Daniel, no Gators make it in the NFL.

Woodson will have trouble making a roster.

I think Jax reached a little to get Harvey.

And there’s a lot more parity in college basketball than there was when Rupp dominated the Big Dance in the 1950’s.

In order to return back to national prominence, the Cats may have to reinvent the wheel.

UK’s biggest problem (no pun intended) is that they don’t have a consistent inside scoring threat aside from Patrick Patterson. I hate to tell you this, but they didn’t exactly address the problem with the freshman class coming in; nobody is taller than 6-6.

Donovan, however, got Allen Chaney (6-8, 220), Eloy Vargas (6-10, 210), AND Kenny Kadji (6-10, 240), not to mention Chandler Parsons and Alex Tyus, who both have a year under their belts.

If UK has another down season, they’ll need to address that problem, and quickly. Small ball only gets you so far, man.

Ha. You were around in the 1950s to judge that talent huh? Most would say the 1950s in college basketball were much better than recent years where the NBA has taken most of the talent. You know, the same years in which your Gators won their only two titles. If everyone would have been forced to stay in college, I doubt Florida would have won anything. Not to mention Billy D has gotten plenty of recruits over the years but he only won with guys who weren’t that highly touted.
As for football, as talented as the Florida program has been in the past 20 years, it hasn’t equated to NFL success at all. Emmit yes, but experts will tell you Moe Williams could have set the NFL record for rushing yards behind that line. Javon Kearse? Just got cut again I believe. Lito Shepard? The Eagles decided to get someone else to man their secondary. Face it, Miami and Florida State have put out much more NFL talent than Florida and as horrible as UK has been, we’re not too far behind.

Florida has produced some awesome NFL talent, but by the same token, you’re right: FSU and Miami have far more players on NFL rosters. That being said, I don’t really care. UF is an elite college football program, not a pro football player factory. I don’t watch pro football, nor do I really care about it. As long as we keep winning, I’ll be happy. And we win plenty around here.

P.S. Jevon Kearse and Lito Shepard are both aging pros who’ve had very good NFL careers. I don’t think comments like “cut again” mean much for guys who’ve already proved everything they need to prove.

At some point when we bring up any other sport except for basketball and to keep dragging it back up gets tiresome.

Let’s face facts, we have football to look forward to. Then we have basketball to look forward to. UK has basketball to look forward to. So party all you want dragging basketball into a football conversation, we’ll be celebrating championships won, while you sit on your hands and wait.

Concise and accurate summation, Urbanisagod.

And your calling all of our national championships flukes is an infantile response.

We needed some luck for all four football/basketball trophies, so what?

EVERYBODY NEEDS A LITTLE LUCK, EVEN UK!

Look at LSU this year, Auburn’s snubbing in ‘04. Look at the split national title in ‘03, the controversial finish in ‘02.

In basketball, UCLA had to endure a painstaking game against Texas A&M before they even made the Final Four. Florida had to beat Georgetown by four in ‘06. Hell, the Comeback Cats had to come back THREE STRAIGHT TIMES in order to win the national championship.

You’re probably just mad that UK isn’t the SEC’s darling anymore.

Ahh but we are, just check out our television coverage a year after you won two national titles…can’t wait till basketball season, what about you guys..haha

That’s fine, Daniel.

Look, we’ve been very accommodating of your Gator bashing here but the fact of the matter is you’re wearing out your welcome a bit. I’m not going to have every thread at O&B Hue devolve into the Daniel show. You need to stay on topic more or your comments are going to start disappearing.

You haven’t even addressed any of my perfectly legit concerns with next year’s Cat team.

I thought you’d be all over me for saying bad things about UK.

And by the way, I find your sentiments on Florida scholastics extremely offensive.

You see, I went through the whole choosing-a-school process last year as a high school senior.

I got rejected from Caltech despite having what I considered to be a rather competitive resume. Rose-Hulman and Georgia Tech let me in but didn’t offer a good enough financial aid package. In reality, I pick UF not because of the sports, but because they offered the best preparation/monetary value for grad school.

Face it, it’s not funny to me at all.
I don’t go on A Sea of Blue or Cats Pause and insult you for having rednecks, fried chicken, and horse racing. I don’t insult the bloggers on those sites without rhyme or reason. I don’t talk about The Stomp, Texas Western, the Eddie Sutton mess, or the point shaving scandal from the 40’s and 50’s. I stick to my own stuff.

And so should you.

Oh but Gatorpilot, without me you’d only have three posts per topic.
Vincy, I explained already. Your boy Urbanisgod and skigator started on me by talking about how stupid us Kentucky grads are. Just follow the progression of this topic and it’s easy to read, or is that the problem. Just kidding, don’t go all crazy on me now. But Woodson’s Kentucky education was made fun of first. Second, as evident in this thread, I was talking about football until others reverted back to basketball comparisons. It’s like you always say about the jealousy thing gatorpilot, well, it’s true for Florida fans. I was talking about football but then other bloggers, in their constant envy of our all-time dominance in basketball, decided to throw in some jabs about the past few seasons. Just like we’ve gotten into on other posts, you can dish it, but you can’t take it.

They might have started it, but I feel the effects of your response.

And our going back to basketball is no better than your going to football. You’re just jealous of us, it’s all even.

I am jealous of your football legacy. I wish we had the same, I’m just grown up enough to admit it. I know that even if we win two national championships back-to-back, we will still not be considered the traditional powerhouse that Florida is. Why can’t you see the same?

Actually, I’m fully aware that we’re not a basketball powerhouse.

However, if Billy D won a third title (which wouldn’t be out of his reach, considering what he’s done in 10 years at UF), the Gators will have crossed that bridge. Duke, UNC, Indiana, Kentucky, and UCLA all have. I can’t see why we can’t.

I won’t deny schools with two titles can be iffy in that department. Kansas was already a top coaching job, even before their 3rd title last month. UConn is an NBA factory. San Francisco and Cincinnatti aren’t making any noise today.

But if we win #3, there’s no doubt in my mind whatsoever.

I already consider Florida top-notch, but I don’t see their basketball team having the fan-following needed to de-throne Kentucky anytime soon.

Well, Duke only has about 9,000 seats in Cameron Indoor Stadium, but they still have a tremendous home-court advantage.

I’ll agree, UK is already well-vested with Rupp Arena. But bear in mind, the O-Dome isn’t a basketball-specific facility. For years, the hoops team has had to share the place with swimming, gymnastics, volleyball, and other sports.

We have to share Commonwealth Stadium with the Klan and the annual pig stomping league.

The difference between UF basketball and UK football is that UF has won 2 national championships and 3 SEC championships in basketball- all more recently than UK has won a backetball title.

Give us a call when you win something in football - other than the Music City Bowl - which was a nice win for the program. I don’t think anyone on this board has ever stated that UF has a better historical program than UK in basketball. Nobody has stated that we have more fans, sell more tickets or draw more nationally televised games. All anyone has ever stated is that UK is no longer the dominant force in the SEC they once were - the days when you win 10 SEC titles in a row are over….at least for the time being.

I will feel good about UF’s chances in beating UK in basketball next season. Will you feel the same about UK’s chances this upcoming football season?

Also, for the record- I never mentioned anything in this thread about UK’s adademic standards. In fact, I applied and was admitted to UK’s Law School.

My comment stating that Woodson would have trouble making a roster is based upon his slow feet and new tendency to throw picks, not his intelligence. I don’t really follow the Wonderlick scores.

I think we’ll score a lot of points on you guys, we always do. Heck, even Western Kentucky did. Not sure we can stop teebag.

All right, all right, I kicked it off with the wonderlik(?) comment.

Klan and Pig stomping, funny stuff.

I’ll be the first to admit that we don’t have NEAR the legacy that UK basketball has. It takes decades of top tier play to start getting close. Right now, we have decade (singular). As far as football, we get the same kind of love there that UK gets in basketball. College Gameday anyone?

Sweet baby Jesus in a swaddling cloth, Daniel…

Do you just pull statements out of your rectal cavity and expect people to believe them or what?

Florida is second in the state behind Miami in providing the NFL with players all time as well as being only second to Miami as state schools go on current NFL rosters…

As well as holding the second longest streak of consecutive first round picks in the NFL draft to the tune of nine years in a row…

At least do some research before you start shooting your mouth off about things you have no idea about, Danny…

Man, and to think I like Chris Dimarco.
