The Law of Diminishing Returns, Or, Why the Weight Room could Win Title #3

Mercy PercyLadies and Gentlemen, we are less than ten weeks away from creating parking troubles in Gainesville, giving Hawaii anything but paradise, and using ridiculous amounts of hyperbole for the most beloved signal-caller at UF since the time Atlanta, not Beijing, held the Olympic Games.

I think we’re due for a magical ride next year, and here’s why:

Urban Meyer has placed a heavy emphasis on speed and explosiveness during his time in Gainesville. However, as he adds more and more fast athletes to Florida’s offense, the value and contributions of each one go down. Hence, the law of diminishing returns.

Make no mistake, having the best offense in the most talented and parity-filled conference in the country is a huge asset. However, I feel that an opponent’s best chance of stopping or slowing down the Gators’ spread offense lies in a 3-4 or 3-3-5 formation, with explosive linebackers alternating between guarding the running game and the passing game.

In short: Man does not live on speed alone. He must also use the new multimillion-dollar weight room funded by wealthy, fanatical boosters who believe Tim Tebow is the best quarterback in college football history.

That’s why Carl Moore will become a very important cog in the wide receiver wheel. That’s why Tim Tebow, the only trustworthy “power” runner, was a marked man in Florida’s ground attack. That’s why Kestahn Moore and Emmanuel Moody can, and should, take pressure off of said general.

And it’s not just them. Rumors have leaked out of Gainesville that Harvin has gained weight. A lot of weight. A lot of muscle weight. Enough weight go from less than 180 pounds to almost 200.

That might seem like a mini-death knell for the Gator offense, but consider that NFL cornerbacks weigh anywhere from 180 to 200 pounds, and college cover men a little less.

If all that muscle doesn’t cramp his speed, it could make Harvin even more of a defensive mismatch than ever before, as in too big for corners, but too fast for safties. A zone could leave another receiver open. The possibilities? Almost endless now.

Florida will make some noise because they have more balance. Speed is still the focus, but they have guys who complement the speedsters nicely.

Burrito: this year, though, is the rabid enthusiasm really so illogical? :)

Until we see an improvement in the defense…

Yes…

Any enthusiasm that leaves me to buy another flag for my car is illogical. And yes I already have the vanity plate. And I live part time in Atlanta. And my car gets keyed sometimes. So yes….

i saw percy walking to his car today and he is huuuuuuuuge! a lot bigger than last year esp. his arms and shoulders!
