The Harvin ‘Fumble’
Look, it’s not sour grapes. Florida obviously defeated Vanderbilt by a wide margin and this blown call has no direct significance — this time — to the Gators.
But if you care about college football, you’ve got to be disturbed with the quality of officiating involved in this disaster.
1) Percy Harvin has a TD. This much is clear from the several good angles the officials had on the field, not to mention the replay angles later. The play is over before he hits the ground — or should have been.
2) If you subscribe to the notion that the ball did not clearly break the plane — it did, though — Percy Harvin was down. This is obvious to anyone, anywhere. Knees… hip… chest… ball is stripped out long afterward. It’s obvious to Bob Davie in the ESPN booth, and it’s obvious to you and me.
3) The ball, after it is “stripped” is spotted not at the 1-inch line, which is where the play ended, but at the Florida 20-yard line.
4) Stunningly, this call was reviewed, and not overturned.
How is this possible? What sort of incompetence, or crazy logic goes into this being anything other than a Florida touchdown?
Whether it’s for or against the good guys, I hate bad officiating. It cheapens the game. These refs deserve to sit out a game or three.

When the referee came back onto the field and said “after review, the ruling on the field is confirmed,” I nearly spit beer everywhere. That was one of the clearest replays I personally have ever seen and how the booth didn’t get it right is beyond me.

Let’s just focus on holding onto the football and keeping it tucked into the body and not extended away from the body. THAT is what causes problems (see Ole Miss game). If we do that - there is no need to review this call because it is never made. We have the ball at the 1 foot line and Tebow smashes it in on the next play.
When we bitch about bad calls, we sound like these guys:

There are always bad calls - sometimes in your favor, sometimes not, but they usually even out.

I was “this close” to throwing a beer mug through the TV at a Beef’O'Brady’s in Tampa….that was ridiculous. I declare shenanigans.
By Jeff T. on 11.10.08 2:29 pm
shenanigans has been declared!
who will second shenanigans?
By jdub on 11.10.08 2:48 pm
2nd on the shenanigans.

I think the douche bags … er refs felt a bit sorry for Vandy. Did you see the personal foul later in the game? The whistle had net even been blown. They made several calls and no calls in the second half. If Bob Davie says it is so, by all means ….

I didn’t know Tim Donaghy is an SEC ref now.

3rd on the Shenanigans. This is the worst call I’ve ever seen. Somebody try to think of a call worse than this.
By Gator Boys on 11.10.08 3:57 pm
Terrible call. Hard to understand how they screwed that one up.
By gamecock man on 11.10.08 3:57 pm
It seems like the guys upstairs are protecting the refs on the field! If they reverse a call isn’t it just protecting the good of the game and helping them out? I don’t understand why they can’t make the correct call when the video is showing the play from nearly 4 to 5 different angles and everyone can see it was incorrect. What gives???

No late hits, 96 fsu (the first one). Worst officiated game in history.
By urbanisagod on 11.10.08 4:57 pm
I don’t believe can you associate “worst officiated game in history” with any other contest than the one and only “Swindle in the Swamp.”
By GatorPilot on 11.10.08 4:58 pm
yeah this isnt as bad as the swindle, screw you jack childress, but that was a terrible call. im hoping the SEC comes forward and says that call was blown, but I doubt it since it didn’t change the outcome of the game significantly.
By rob w on 11.10.08 5:08 pm
I know the Swindle was the worst officiated game, but considering this call was 100% obviously wrong, theres no way a call can possibly be worse. More meaninful/important, but not worse

Ever since I arrived in Gainesville and started going to all of the football and basketball games, I have noticed that the Gators get consistently screwed on calls more than any team I have ever seen (except perhaps the Detroit Pistons, but that’s another discussion).
PS - I was a born and bred Michigan man before I came here. So my initial bias was fully in check.
Gators get screwed by refs, it’s just the f-ing truth.
By corey on 11.11.08 2:13 am
As an unbiased observer, I’ve also noticed that the Gators seem to get bad calls. I find it strange because for the most part the SEC officials favor the conference’s elite teams: Alabama, LSU, Tennessee, etc. Not so for the Gators for some reason. Not sure if there’s anything to it.
By gamecock man on 11.11.08 9:16 am
We are used to it.
By GatorPilot on 11.11.08 9:19 am
I do not agree - I think all SEC teams get some bad calls against them.
By skigator93 on 11.11.08 10:16 am
It’s similar to the phantom ESPN bias. If you like a team, they’re the only team ESPN hates. If you like a team, they’re the only team that gets bad calls.
The Harvin call was garbage, but I’ve watched plenty of Gator games over the years where the other team was “screwed” as well. It just all depends on the color of your glasses.
By The Bull Gator on 11.11.08 11:53 am
Yea, there was a little “catch” at FSU a few years back that went in our direction and changed momentum.
Early on in the SS years, I think we got hit with a bunch of penalties because the refs simply hadn’t ever seen what we were doing and didn’t know what to do. The William and Mary formation comes to mind.
By urbanisagod on 11.11.08 4:26 pm
Not to mention that little TD catch up in Knoxville by Gaffney, which he really dropped. I guess they ruled it a catch because it touched his hands in the endzone!
As a huge Gator fan, I think ESPN gives us (and Tebow) more than our fair share of love.
I think UGA fans are the absolute worst at thinking everyone is out to screw them. They actuall think that Penn Wagers was out to get the Dawgs in the Florida game. They think that Herbstrait and teh ESPN crew has a bias against the Dawgs and that Knowshawn can’t compete for the Heisman because of this bias.
By skigator93 on 11.11.08 5:04 pm
Plenty of bad calls, for and against the Gators…that’s why they have the replay system and this one not being overturned was BS.
Worst “body of work” in a game…swindle in the Swamp.
Worst single call…Dallas Baker getting flagged at UT. (Absolutely NOT a case of the 2nd guy getting the flag because the ref didn’t see the first one. Ref was watching both…maybe it was because the voloser smacked Baker and Baker knocked the sh*t out of him. )
Jabar “catch”…maybe, maybe not…anyone claiming it is definite one way or the other has an agenda.
By jimtheg8r on 11.11.08 7:12 pm
You’re right on the call against Slappy Baker (we called him by that name from that point forward). Not only was that a terrible call, but it determined the outcome of the game instead of letting the players decide it on the field. It should have been a double flag - offsetting unsportsmanlike conduct.
Teh Swindle is easily the worst officiated game due to the volume of blown calls that really affected the game.
By skigator93 on 11.12.08 10:57 am
I still put UF at 100% in red zone scoring this year. This one was stolen from them and the only other time they didn’t come back with points was when they were running out the clock in Knoxville. An awesome statistic — scoring point 35 out of 37 times crossing the 20 (and 2 don’t count).
