Florida Whips FSU Yet again, 45-15

Anyone surprised by today’s final? The Gators produced 502 total yards and scored 45 points in terrible weather conditions. Given they sacrificed most of the 4th quarter to pound the rock and kill the clock, the conclusion is that Florida has a pretty damn good offense. Despite four punts and a fourth down stop at the goal line, I believe the Gators were actually better than they were offensively against South Carolina in the first half. You’ll recall I had some criticisms of the offense at that point.

The ABC commentating crew couldn’t stop gushing about Tebow. The Chosen One provided yet another outstanding performance, completing 12 of 21 passes for 185 yards and 3 TDs. He also ran for an additional 80 yards and 1 TD. That stat line might not jump out, but when you watch the film of Tebow splashing around in Tallahassee’s ugliest waterpark, you appreciate exactly what he brought to the table in this game. It was a Hesiman-worthy performance from the burly Gator signal-caller. Has Tebow’s Heisman stock improved? Probably. Will he win it? Probably not. Should any of us care? No. We have more important prizes to win.

As fun as it was watching Tebow and his speedy backs destroy FSU’s secondary, it was even more enjoyable watching the Gator D absolutely hammer the Nolie quarterbacks. Future Heisman Trophy CandidateTM Ponder was miserable: 5/14, 60 yards, 2 INTs. It was shocking to see Drew Weatherford take the field again, and the redshirt senior didn’t exactly light things up in his final home game: 4/15 for 61 yards and a fumble leading to a turnover. Even “D’Voe” was 1/2 and threw a pick.

Speaking of defense, this was CB Janoris Jenkins’ coming out party. Jenkins made big plays all over the field, breaking up countless passes and picking one off for good measure. It is now patently obvious that the Gators have two of the best cornerbacks in the league with Joe Haden achoring down the other side of the field. As Will Hill continues to come on at safety and Major Wright showing some solid play — also picking off a tipped pass — the Gators’ defense is legitimately among the nation’s best.

Percy Harvin was injured after being tackled on a direct snap in the 2nd quarter and did not return. Despite Bob Griese’s constant claims of expertise in the area of this type of injury, and insistence that Harvin is as good as gone ’til the bowl game, we don’t yet know what happened. Hopefully it’s something Harvin can recover from quickly — we surely do need him back as soon as possible.

Aaron Hernandez was awesome, catching two TD passes and running a couple of shovel passes for long inside yardage. Surely this is one of the best Tight Ends in the nation. He will be even better next year.

Again it was total dominance on both sides of the ball. Great job, Gators. Since there’s always room for improvement, let’s make a list.

1. Kickoffs.
2. Kickoff coverage.

And that’s it. God only knows how or why Caleb Sturgis is still directional-kicking for the corner but I swear on the Holy Bible that if I see another kick go out of bounds I am going to lose it. There is absolutely no excuse for this and despite the good play from every other unit, it was mind-bogglingly annoying to give the ball to Florida State at the 40-yard line time and time again. And on the rare occasions the kick wasn’t out of bounds, it was short. One glance at the drive chart should make it clear how field position played a role in FSU’s scoring opportunities.

FSU’s offense was so anemic that even when allowed long returns or given the ball (thanks to a Demps fumble) in the red zone they were unable to assemble more than a handful of field goals and one TD drive — which was actually an improvement from last year. Do we expect better teams to give us the same mulligans when we provide consistently good field position thanks to lousy kicking? I’m not trying to forecast too far into the future but a team like, say, Oklahoma, would seem likely to convert those opportunities into points. Just saying.

But that’s where the complaints start and stop. Today is a day of celebration! It’s another joyous victory over the hated Seminoles of Florida State, and even better: Florida’s redshirt seniors have never lost to Florida State. Urban Meyer is now a perfect 4-0 over Bobby Bowden and has lost only one rivalry game in his entire tenure as head coach. 45-15: an early Christmas gift. Thanks to Urban Meyer and the coaching staff for another great performance. It is time to set our sights on the Crimson Tide, and bringing home another SEC title to the Swamp.

I’m with you on the kickoffs. If one goes out of bounds next week, something in my house might get broken. I miss Matt Piotrowicz.

Mentally, our 6th year seniors are also undefeated vs. FSU.

This is by far my favorite team since 01. I hope they can win the next 2 games. Think it’ll be a while before we will find the special offensive playmakers of Tebow/Harvin for quite a while.

I absolutely hate having our Gators go into Doak Campbell/Bobby Bowden Field/Ron Zook Field. It always seems like half our team goes down to injuries. Harvin is once again the worse from having played on the flooded sod field.

Go Gators! Let’s take two more!!

#1: I’m not surprised by the FSU fans’ reaction to Harvin. From Darnell Dockett to today, this is a fanbase that thrives on conniving. It’s a culture of rooting for injury (even if it means throwing a chair in a campus brawl). Memo to the opponents of UF: don’t give them any reason to circle the date of next year’s game with you (see: UF 49 UGA 10, November 1, 2008).
#2: I’m not fooled by Bobby Bowden, under whose wide-eyed lack of oversight this ridiculous culture flourishes. I don’t buy for one second any class attributed to him. Nothing changes in Tally until he’s gone.
#3: Deal with it FSU: you’re not an elite team. You’re not as close as you think you are to BEING an elite team. You are an entire recruiting class away from contending against the Gators, and that recruiting class better be darn good.
These two teams are going in opposite directions.
As a Gator fan, I don’t mind throttling FSU. I just wish they’d field a respectable team so this could be interesting again.
Well, on to the ATL… GO GATORS! Roll the Tide silly!

OK, I just got back from the game and I felt the need to write about my displeasures. This was my first time watching the Gators in Tallahasee. As an objective fan my first impressions of the experience were very good despite being called a “florida fag” by drunken students while walking through student housing. For the most part FSU fans had their heads hung low and humble, as their present football situation should justify. I was surprised at how many parking spots were open so close to the stadium, I guess those Big Chiefs just aren’t showing up. Once inside I was impressed by thier massive HD screens, 100 ft on the north endzone with ribbon screens throughout the stadium, and a 45 footer on the south endzone. This initial admiration quickly turned to dismay when I realized what the forces of evil were using it for. During many Florida offensive plays this massive siezure indusing machine would flash “Make Some Noise” in a mind numbingly quick black and white display that made me think lightning was striking the stadium. My mother-in-law(a confessed FSU fan) said you could see it during night games on television. I do not know what the NCAA rules are on visual displays but I couldn’t focus on the play without covering the jumbotron with my hand. I can’t imagine what the players on the field were going through but this has to have a negative effect on the play of the visiting team. This display would last the duration of the Florida play, not stopping before the play like the music is supposed to. If there are rules governing music, these visual displays shoud be included. If we hadn’t handed them thier own colons I’d be much more pissed about this, if you were at the Doke and had these same observations please let me know.
The next thing that really chapped my dick was FSU fans booing an injured Percy Harvin as he left the field. I’ve been to many collegiate and professional sporting events and never have I witnessed such a classless display. In defense of some of the more mature and perhaps dignified fans of FSU I did see some them clapping Percy off the field.
Other than the “F#C* Tim Tebow” that was so elligently spray painted in thier own tunnel I can’t think of a thing that gave me a negative connotation of visiting the Doak, besides the guy trying to run me off the road in his chevy astro van while I was walking back through the student section. Scoreboard!… A$$hole

Booing an injured player is completely unacceptable. Come on people, we all learn that at a young age when you play youth sports. A kid gets hurt, you take a knee. The same applies later in life. A player gets hurt, you clap when he leaves the field. This is especially disappointing because in 2006 in a “when pigs fly” act of compassion, the FSU fans chanted “PERCY HARVIN” and clapped when he was taken off the field. Maybe their feelings change depending on the relative closeness of the game.

Overall I thought UF played a well rounded game minus the start at the 40 every time. My biggest qualm was on some calls. The main one being the Tebow dive for the first down near the goal line and the ball being marked back at the line of scrimmage despite all the commentators saying he had the first. If not getting the ball marked near the first wasn’t bad enough why Urban called a timeout but didn’t ask for a review is beyond me. Makes me think he pulled a McNabb and forgot the rules as this inevitably led to him trying to sneak Tebow on 4th and 1 despite having it on 3rd down and not reviewing it.

The Gators really need to get beyond the Tebow sneak on 4th and 1.5 EVERYTIME because it’s clearly not working and getting stuffed time and time again. Despite UF penalties being called (without ONE replay, thanks ABC) and that bad call at the goal line call could have been made up by the head ref Ron Cherry calling a “Giving him the business call” that he has been known to do but alas…no luck.

FSU booing doesn’t surprise me as these fans put the ass in class. Watching the game on ABC was becoming very difficult with the complete lack of replays along with the never-ending, “Ohhh Percy is injured, an injury like that you’ll be lucky if he walks again” diagnoses. Thank your DR. ABC and your accredited ability to practice medicine. I didn’t catch as much Tebow and UF praise as you had mentioned as all I heard were pro-FSU commentary and ACC commentary the entire time.

He kicks it along the sidelines because Meyer wants him to kick it there, and has said so in the past. Why exactly that is I really can’t say.

I didn’t really have any issues with the fans this game. We parked and tailgated down from the stadium in the parking lot of the civic center where the number of Florida fans easily out numbered the FSU fans, and the only incident I had was with a drunk student going to the game that wanted to pick a fight with a friend of mine.

Speaking of Greise, he was an awful commentator for this game. Constantly was stumbling over his words and never had anything insightful to say at all. It would have been better if he simply wasn’t on the crew at all.

No kidding GP. At one point my fiancee looked at me and said “is there something wrong with him?”

Yea WTF is with those flashing lights? How can that be legal?
