Many of those turnovers that go sailing out of bounds will become easy dunks in the NBA because players don’t give up on the play as quickly as UF’s players do.

I’m not even a huge Calathes fan…I just recognize talent when it is there.

I hope you are right about Tyus, but he’d better get a LOT stronger if he’s going to be an effective college star - let alone an NBA player.

Miller was clutch is all. Calathes has a lee humphrey-esque stroke IN PRACTICE. But when the competition is tight, he flicks his panic shots up like a hot potato, and it’s quite ugly.

Tyus will go further professionally than any player on this team. Disagree? Fine, but come back for your crow in three years, please.

I love talking football with my Gator brethryn (what was that about being a drinking town with a football problem?). But with basketball, i’m surrounded by people who think the most advertised player is the best one– people who only watch the ball and not the 90% of the game that happens away from the ball– and people who count “assists” but not “ball flying out of bounds because of ill-advised pass”. If you watched Calathes when he is away from the ball, you’ll see that he is just waiting for the ball.

Not all pass-first players are unselfish. Passing can be just another way of making it all about you, and that is precisely my issue with Calathes.

Tyus has natural balance in the air; he lifts effortlessly; his shoulders are always square when he lifts, even when he is off balance. He has a soft touch even when the pressure is on, and he applies more than half of his effort when he does not have the ball. These are rare qualities indeed.

I watched Jason Kidd at Cal. The guy almost never threw bad passes, and was always busy running all over the place and setting screens when without the ball. Calathes doesn’t have it. Combine that with a consistent tendency to choke when it matters and you have a euro-ball 2nd string at best.

If he had Mike Miller’s shot? FYI, Calathes shot better from outside than Miller both years. Miller was a career 34.5% shooter from behind the arc. Calathes shot 38%. Plus, that doesn’t even take into account that the line was moved back for Calathes’ sophomore year - when he actually shot better (39%) than the previous year.

There are a lot of terrible point guards in the NBA with less talent than Calathes. You can bad mouth him all you want - but he never quit on his team while wearing the O&B (Speights?). He set the UF season assist record both years while being surrounded by less than mediocre players.

You think Tyus can lead this team? The same Tyus that makes 1 out of 3 layup attemps when he should just be dunking?!

I love my fellow Gators, but a little reality please. This kid can’t lead a game winning 3 on 1 break against a middling SEC team, without dribbling off of his foot and falling down. He throws away nearly as many passes as puts on the money, and is quite possibly the most selfish “pass first” player I have ever seen. GIVE ME A BREAK. If he had Mike Miller’s shot, maybe. But, as it is, no freaking way.

Go back and replace Lee Humphrey with Nick Calathes, and UF is still without a basketball title.

But I say, “GO,” we’re better without you. I would love to see Tyus take over the wing next year, with a true point regulating the offense.

Calathes wants to be Magic Johnson while he better resembles Jason Williams, without the dribble.

He’d actually be a really great fit for the Lakers because the triangle offense plays to his strengths.

Seriously, I would not be surprised if he goes late in the first round. He is definitely a talented kid.
