Tyus to Transfer
This is awful news.
From the Gainesville Sun:
The University of Florida announced this morning that basketball player Alex Tyus intends to transfer from the Gators.
It is unknown to where Tyus plans to transfer. This was announced during Billy Donovan’s press conference at the UF basketball practice facility.
What the sam hell is going on here?

What’s going on? The most talented player on the team is tired of playing second fiddle to calathes. This is horrible news.
I can only dream of what would have happened had Donovan never recruit Calathes and Parsons.
1 - Patterson would have come on board.
2 - Lucas would have stayed.
3 - Tyus would be an all american beast.
That nucleus would have had us in the sweet sixteen last year.
Enjoy those errant calathes passes and parsons winking at girls in the stands while he looses his way on defense next year.
Great.

Read what Urban says and John Wooden say.
We make the team around the talent we have. Not Billy, he makes the team in a preset mold he has..He has been asleep at the wheel for the last two years. You could tell when he said last year

Tyus = dime a dozen
He’s not even close to the most talented player on the team. I will say he was the most talented jumper, and he benefited from a top notch PG blessing him with gifts.
He is a petite power forward who wants to play small forward. I guess we’ll just have to find another undersized, leaping garbageman who fails to block shots.
In plain english - Tyus put his own self before the team. Couldn’t be more clear. He wasn’t worried about the team but rather his own opportunity to play a position he’ll never be suited for. Good riddance. I’d rather have a roster full of team guys who’ll channel a little bit of that ‘05-’07 chemistry than an “I” guy.

Not recruit Calathes or Parsons? Honestly? You’re against signing state champion, Jordan and McDonald’s All American in-state players in the consensus top 25 players for their class? Wow… Let’s keep in mind that Calathes will be playing for pay in a few months and Parsons will be a force for the Orange and Blue for the next 2 yrs.

Tyus will never be a superstar…he is way too soft and he often opts to miss weak layups instead of dunking.
I am just thankful that Al Horford never “got tried of playing second fiddle to Noah.”
As Lawrence Wright reminded us….”if you ‘aint a Gator, you must be Gator Bait!”
Alex Tyus….Gator Bait…Jai Lucas? Gator Bait? Painter? Gator Bait.
Also, I think most Kentucky fans would agree that Patterson had a less than memorable college career.
I also fully admit this team is in big trouble. Does anyone else think that we might have been better off with Coach Grant?!?

I have to admit I am surprised Tyus left.
Gotta wonder what is going on……

We are fine with Billy. We just seem to have had an unprecedented string of bad luck lately when it comes to players. Three NIT years in a row would be pretty tough to swallow.

Yeah, us UK fans would think Patrick Patterson has had a less than memorable college career…..ARE YOU JOKING????
Stats for two years:
17.2 points per game
8.5 boards per game
1.7 blocks per game
60% from the field last year.
I think you would give your left arm for someone who put up those stats playing in a position downlow!!!

Horford was never forced to play out of his position and squander his talent.
lol
“Hey, Al, you’ll be in the two-spot shooting jumpers”
“No, I won’t . . . .”

I’m telling you, Billy letting that little type A brat assume control of this team was a huge mistake.
I’d take Tyus over Calathes ANY DAY.
I guess we’ll have to resume this discussion in a two or three years, when Tyus is projected top ten pick, and Calathes disappeared after being drafted second round, never playing, and heading back over to Greece, where he also will not play very much.

Horford absolutely played out of position (he is a natural PF) and continues to do so to this day. Don’t compare Tyus to Big Al - that’s absolutely ridiculous as they aren’t even in the same galaxy.
Looks like Tyus pulled a Donovan - he’s coming back and says UF is where he wants to be….I think I like him even less now. Still think he’ll develop into a lottery pick with 2 more years of NIT action at UF?

PF and C are much more related than SG/SF and PF/C, as the former play with their backs to the basket, and the latter face the basket.
I wonder if you’ll still be sticking with the ‘Calathes is better than Tyus’ thing next year when the Gators make the tourney with Tyus leading the way and without Calathes, if Calathes does indeed move on . . .
By corey on 04.28.09 3:30 pm
BTW - Tyus had a better fg% (59%) than Horford or Calathes.
By corey on 04.28.09 3:32 pm
Erving Walker is your point guard?
Looks like Calathes is going home.
Say what you want but this team has serious issues….trust me…..as a UK fan we have seen this type of situation first hand…..
