SEC PowerPoll Week 12

Week 12 has passed and it’s time for another viewing of the O&BHue SEC Powerpoll ballot.

1) Florida - FIU provided the perfect patsies to work on the passing game.  It’s like invading Poland before attacking a real army to work out the kinks.
2) Alabama - Other than the obvious bragging rights the Alabama-Auburn game has surprisingly little importance overall.  It really IS like we have a playoff system!
3) Ole Miss - Nutt has the Rebels peaking at the right time. Despite being a preseason darling it looks as though the best the Rebs can do is match last season’s accomplishment.
4) LSU - I hope Les Miles realizes that his sideline gesture for “send the FG unit on!” is so similar to what most teams use to signal “spike the ball” as to cause confusion.
5) Arkansas - The Hogs average almost 48 points in their wins and 21 in their losses.  A low scoring game against LSU does not bode well.
6) Auburn - I think the “character recruits” Tubberville left at Auburn were actual character actors from the Orlando Disney Resorts.
7) South Carolina - Spurrier’s best bet against Clemson is trying to convince his team that the bye week was actually the end of the 2009 season and this game is the first of 2010.
8) Tennessee - One more win and Kiffin can pass Kentucky in the league standings . . . wow . . . IMPRESSIVE!!!
9) Kentucky - While the basketball team has been less than impressive so far Rich Brooks and company continue to forge this program ahead.
10) Georgia - UGA should wear black against Georgia Tech. 1) It will demonstrate the proper mourning for the season. 2) If the Dawgs lose badly maybe people won’t know who they are.
11) Mississippi State - If the Mississippi State defense was a dam, the whole team would have drowned by now.
12) Vanderbilt - There aren’t really a lot of answers for that offense. They just don’t seem to have anybody fast and they don’t seem to be able to block anybody.

It’s rivalry week and although that means it’s time for the SEC’s biggest rivalry in Alabama and Auburn, what most interests me are the interconference matchups between the SEC and ACC.  In that regard it’s time for South Carolina vs Clemson, Georgia vs Georgia Tech and Florida vs. Florida State.  While the Gators look to be a big favorite the other contests have the SEC participants playing the role of the underdog.  A slumping Gamecock team comes off a bye for a last ditch try at redemption.  A win against Clemson might salvage a once promising season for Spurrier’s crew.  A Georgia team in utter disarray can also restore it’s wounded pride with a win over the highly ranked Rambling Wreck.  For Florida State I look for another nail to be pounded into Bowden’s coffin.  Another embarrassing blowout loss in Gainesville (his third against Meyer) would all but seal the fate on the old man’s legacy . . . and not in a good way.

As always check out the combined SEC Powerpoll on Wednesday at TeamSpeedKills.

Anytime you play a rivalry game, you can toss the records out the window. Everyone seems to play over their heads, at least for the first 15 minutes. After that talent takes over — unless you allow your over classed opponent to hang around close, where momentum can still play a part — and the result is usually predictable.

However, add to that what we’ve done to the Noles the last 5 times out (“5 straight over Florida State!” 3 of those in their own house — we’re 3-0 on “Bobby Bowden Field.”); add to that the gators are # 1 in the nation, are undefeated this season, and are running ahead of a 21 game winning streak — the longest in the country — and you have the basis of getting your opposing team jacked shy-high.

But, we still have to go back to that old “talent” thing. Momentum is a very fickle inducement, and comes and goes at a whim. Something you certainly cannot depend on. 9 out of 10 times, talent will always win out over pride. Once the whistle blows, and people start hitting each other in the face, talent will win. Almost always!

I see this game as hard fought for a while (See above; it takes about 15 minutes for pride to realize that it cannot win alone), and then the gators start putting the Noles away. It won’t be as flashy as last year, but it will be more methodical, more dominate and more predictable. I never predict a final score, be we will “Win by 10,” making it “6 straight over Florida State.”

The Poles did try to beat Nazi tanks with cavalry on horseback, but it didn’t help when the Soviets invaded them two weeks later. FIU was more like Grenada.

And speaking of Bowden KG, what is it about old ex-athletes, and coaches, that refuses to allow them to step down, when the handwriting is on the wall, and while they still have some “echo” of their legacy? Watching Bowden has become downright depressing. FSU should cut him lose for his own sake, if not theirs.

By the same token, albeit not quite as dire as Bobby, Spurrier too, has obviously stayed too long at the inn, and needs to call it a day, before he too becomes the issue, rather than the cure. It no longer matters whether he can get good athletes or not. He has stayed in that position long enough, and is what he’ll be remembered for most, if he stays much longer.

Get out Bobby, they’re about to bury you in the hole you’ve dug for yourself. And you need to get out also Steve, as the hole you’re digging is beginning to look a lot like Bobby’s.

i’d like to win by 40 just for micky andrews’ sake. i’d really like to send him out with a kick in the gut, or a twisted knee/ankle like he has taught his boys for the past 2 1/2 decades. albeit, what comes around goes around again and it aint pretty when it hits home. is it mick??
for the life of me i can’t figure out why these past 4 or 5 semi teams are so bad. the past 4 or 5 recruiting classes have been very good for the semi’s. what is really going on in tally? poor coaching? could it be that jimbo’s not the answer? i’ve noticed this; since the acc added VT, UM, and ??? to their conference, the noles win loss record has plummeted worse than the stock market. since the acc’s expansion the noles now have to get ready to play more than 2 games a year; (UM to start and UF to end the year) like their schedules were in the 90’s when they were “supposed to be” an elite program.(i believe the semi’s w/l vs UF was slightly over 50% during the 90’s but of course UF played in the sec and we were usually getting ready for our sec championship game the week after the semi’s game) i always wondered why BB refused to join the sec, now i can say, i saw the light. he knew he’d have to get them feathered warriors ready to play more than a “couple” times a year in the sec.
either way, this nole team is extremely talented and if they were well coached, they would probably play us close. but i, like bull gator, believe we’ll win by 10 or more. GO GATORS

Hey pLANEolG8rB8, please don’t get me wrong. I would love for Super Tim to hang half a hundred on old Mickey Mouse Andrews — and for Slinging John to air out another 25 — just so the cud spitting little SOB will remember us. “Leave em laughing” as Sid Ceaser used to say!

As for why the Noles have been underperforming of late, IMO you can hang that one right on Elmer Fudd Bowden’s front door knob. He’s the one who has created all the indecivive ruckus in Tallahassee, more than enough to have their kids guessing just which way is up. When will Elmer step out; when will the Fisherman step in; just what in hell is a “coach-in-waiting,” and how much control does he carry. All of that — and I suspect much more — has got to be getting under their kids skin, and causing an awful lot of head scratching. I also suspect that FSWho has lost a few commitments because of the school’s indecission, and will likely lose more. “I love it when a plan comes together.”

Take care my friend and have yourself a great, and safe, Thanksgiving Day/weekend. Oh…..and “keep your damn head down!”

Indeed…..I hope the entire Gator Nation has a safe and great Thanksgiving.

thanks bull gator, my best to you and yours, and gator nation as well, ;-)
