March 16th, 2010 FLORIDA FOOTBALL: FOOD FOR A MAN'S SOUL SEND US AN EMAIL

Looking Back at Alabama after a week.

All good things must come to end. For us as Gator fans, the end came too soon.

Give Alabama credit. They came back upset after being victim to Tim Tebow’s first (and, to date, last) fourth-quarter comeback, and they had their way with us all day.

In lieu of a long-past-deadline postmortem, I can say with a high degree of confidence that this game will go down as one that forever changed the college football landscape as we know it:

* All that discussion of Tim Tebow no longer being the greatest of all time? Due to this game.

* If Mark Ingram wins the Heisman? Due to this game.

* Meyer and Saban chasing the Bear, as compared to Meyer being this generation’s Bear? Due to this game.

* If, heaven forfend, Brian Kelley doesn’t get it done and Meyer darts for Notre Dame in a few years? Due to this game.

* All those awards Tebow didn’t win last night? Due to this game.

As for Teargate, to be frank, it wasn’t unexpected given the result. Look at the Promise. Tebow is obviously holding back tears. While I can’t deny that college football is filled with emotion, at the same time, well, you don’t exactly see that kind of display from every player. I rest my case.

Now it’s on to the Sugar Bowl, a date with Cincinnati, where Oscar Robertson, Kenyon Martin, Kevin Youkilis, and, yes, Urban Meyer, once played sports. Looking at it from an X’s and O’s perspective, Joe Haden on Mardy Gilyard is key. Looking at it from intangibles, getting up and playing hard after a big loss is even bigger.

By the way, congrats to Charlie Strong. He’s more than earned his right to coach at a program like Louisville.

C’mon fellow Gators… If you guys (and gals) didn’t see Bama coming after our “win” against Arkansas then you not only wear Orange and Blue glasses, but obviously started drinking similar kool aid.

The rear view mirror is always 20/20 and if you took the time to look before this game at the difference in schedules… You would have seen Bama coming. We play nothing but cup cakes out of conference and that is ridiculous. Meanwhile, Bama is playing the likes of Virginia Tech.

Also, our SEC opponents have been rebuilding and while they are easy targets now, they won’t be over the next few years.

We were over-hyped by the media and by ourselves and pretty soon we started believing it all.

Lets be true Gator Fans and realize we are going to go through SEVERAL years of rebuilding, and maybe, we may never see this type of run again.

Ain’t College Football wonderful?

At the risk of being one of those “wait ’till next year” types, I’d venture that while next year’s Florida team may not reach the level of the championship teams, they’re still a potentially dangerous group.

For starters, John Brantley has gotten to pick Tebow’s brain for the past three years, and no news on Scot Loeffler leaving (as of right now) is good news. And even if it’s garbage time, Brantley threw 48 pass attempts, with SEVEN for TDs and ZERO picks. And remember that Andre Debose guy? He should be healthy next season.

Picking the right guy to replace Charlie Strong will pay dividends.

I think that most Gators, with even a smattering of football acumen, after watching this team play game after game, knew that it was not the same team that won it all in 2008.

We had a returning two deep shift rotation in our defense, and, on paper, should have been better than last year. But, while we did play some great defensive games, that look of 2008 was just not there. Where did it go? I haven’t a clue, but this team was not ready to play Alabama, as they were ready to play Oklahoma.

I must place that on coaching. Meyer and staff did not have these boys ready to play Alabama last Saturday night. Nor was he able to make any appreciable adjustments, as the game went on.

Alabama had a solid game plan; Saban had them ready to play; and accordingly they played with confidence and were comfortable with what they were doing. Florida wasn’t any of that, as Meyer did not have his team ready to play. It was obvious from the first play, and sadly all the way to the last play. The game was never in doubt.

Seriously, what was up with Jeff Demps and Chris Rainey only getting 3 rushes between them?

Was Steve Addazio really that afraid of Terrence Cody? Did the team not know how to handle playing with a deficit? Did Kirby Smart disguise himself in Florida clothes and sabotage the film room session? Why, why, WHY?

“They came back upset after being victim to Tim Tebow’s first (and, to date, last) fourth-quarter comeback”

Erm… Arkansas?

It comes down to one thing. Making plays. All year, we lived on the edge. We made plays when it counted, and waited for the other team to screw up and throw a pick to Trattou. Alabama played flawlessly. We dropped passes (5-6), threw a TD pass a few feet too low, got called for penalties when we finally got defensive stops, and missed timely tackles. Meanwhile, Bama tight-roped sidelines, caught over-the-shoulder passes, and did not get called for a single significant penalty (they can thank the refs for letting 3 holds and a block in the back go on the 65-yd screen pass though).

Last year’s team was just as much opportunistic on defense. It was INTs that won over OU in the BCSCG. Sooner or later, somebody doesn’t make a mistake against you though, and then you’re in trouble.

Oh my god, you can use all the football lingo and give each number down to the smallest detail… The truth is, our offense all year has looked like GARBAGE (except vs Georgia).

The refs in the SECCG looked so dignified calling every penalty against Florida. There were VERY few flags throwin against Alabama’s grab-happy offense.

If Brandon James doesn’t get swallowed up by a PUNTER it changes the dynamic of the game.

Urban needs to have his head checked if Addazio is calling plays again next year. He can say its a callaborative effort all day - but we know that’s bullshit.

Finally, if we keep recruiting these soft ass offensive lineman, D-lines like Alabama’s will continue to run straight through it. What do you think Brantley is going to do with three 360+ lbs beasts running at him? Last Saturday was the worst game I’ve seen Florida play since the loss to Miss St. in 03. We were absolutely annihilated.

when bama chose to go on offense to open the game, then drove the ball down our throats to score, i knew then that bama was focused, and they were ready to play ball!!!
when demps dropped the swing pass in the opening drive, (maybe a touchdown) i knew then that our gators were not ready to play. to be champions, you have to make most of the difficult plays, our gators could not even make the simplest of plays.
our gators were focused vs bama in 08 and made even the most difficult plays look easy. just as bama made their difficult plays look easy this year.

having played this game for a number of years on various levels, i believe that coaches and players alike are responsible for their own mental and physical preparation…..don’t try to convince me that bama was that much better than our gators, do not tell me that our defense was ready to play! because they were not! charie strong must have been on the phone all week with louisville instead of coaching his team up and game planning. ingram won this years’ heisman because our boys were arm tackling instead of sticking his a–!!! auburn held him to less than 50 total yards one week prior with a make shift unit. so don’t give excuses about our missing, alchoholic, personel either. bama’s offense dominated our defense because they wanted it more than our defense, their rb’s “never” fell backwards, their qb was able to tiptoe, convert third downs running backwards in the red zone, block our LB’s, and throw the ball with confidence because our defense took the day off and were not flying around the field making them pay. it all comes down to a comment that i read in the gainsville sun by ahmad black’s father “ahmad told me that he didn’t feel like coach respected him because he didn’t start the season opener” this is the attitude of this years florida gators. now, all of a sudden the coaches had better show me some respect or i will go down the road. last season ahmad was the second team strong safety behind dorian monroe until monroe was injured. ahmad came off the bench and played like a champion, where was this attitude in 09?

I think it all comes down to one thing - “I’m gonna protect my draft standing.” There is way too much that I’ve been hearing about this team, from the inside, to just ignore. I thought that they were going to be like the basketball team - unselfish and sticking to it through the end.

Now, I just think that a good number of players were too busy making sure they didn’t get injured so they would be drafted high. And at least one coach, NOT Charlie Strong or Urban Meyer, knew what was going on and failed to do anything about it. It’s no wonder Tebow was upset - his boys didn’t get beaten honestly, they quit on him.

Wow, I can’t believe it’s me saying those things. That’s the worst part of it all for me, I’ve lost faith in the team. A loss I could take, but not giving the game away out of selfishness.

TERIG8R…..the truth is the truth

Your reign is over Gator fans. Miami’s turn to rule the state(again). It’s a cycle…and its your turn to be average.

I dont remember Ken Dorsey crying like a Bitch when we lost Ohio State. Tebow is a crybaby. Man’s game Tebow.

Meyer’s quitting?!

What is everyone doing for New Years Eve before the sugarbowl? Tragedy about Meyer as well….
